Aquariums in Armenia: water, materials, shops and local rules

This is the page the rest of the site exists for. The water, the one real shop, the stone under your feet, and the law. Facts a person in Yerevan can act on this week, each with the source it came from and the date it was read.

Everything here was checked on 8 September 2026. Where a claim could not be stood up, this page says so instead of guessing. Two of the three shops the hobby names in Armenia turned out to need correcting.

This page continues

The stone under this country has a page of its own.

Start here

These pages do the practical work for this country.

Where to buy it, who to ask about it, and what we are trying to build. The water, the law and the shelves further down are the reasoning behind them.

Water

Good water. Not a constant one.

Yerevan is supplied from springs on the western slopes of the Gegham range. That water has run through fractured volcanic lava, not through limestone, which is why it is soft. It is bicarbonate based, low in dissolved solids, and close to neutral.1

The numbers below are measured, not estimated. They come from a peer reviewed study that sampled the source springs and real household taps in named Yerevan districts, eight or nine samples per point over more than two years, analysed at the Institute of Geological Sciences of the National Academy of Sciences.1

Yerevan from the air, dense pink and grey blocks packed around a tree lined avenue running to the horizon, a dry yellow hillside and a curving highway across the foreground, and mountains faint behind the haze.
Yerevan from the air, which is the city the hardness table is about. It drinks from springs on the western slopes of the Gegham range, and what arrives at the tap is soft everywhere in this frame. Almost nobody here needs to treat their water before they use it. Photograph Alexandr Hovhannisyan

The photographs on this page were taken by other people and shared on Unsplash. Every one of them is named, with thanks, on the credits page.

Hardness is printed in the paper in the Soviet unit, mg-eq per liter. One mg-eq per liter is 2.804 dGH, or 50.05 mg/L as CaCO3. The conversion is ours2. The paper's own overall range is 1.0 to 4.0 mg-eq/L1, that is 2.8 to 11.2 dGH2, with pH 6.25 to 7.301.

Checked twice

Two sources, one answer

Aparan spring water is bottled and sold, and the label carries a full analysis. Calcium 22.54 mg/L and magnesium 6.69 mg/L3 work out to 4.70 dGH2. The label's own hardness figure of 1.673 works out to 4.68 dGH2. The 2005 paper gives Aparan as 1.65 to 1.801. Three routes, the same number.

Calculated, not measured

KH, which nobody publishes

No source publishes a KH figure for Yerevan. Aparan bicarbonate is 106.75 mg/L3, which divided by 21.8 gives 4.9 dKH against a measured 4.7 dGH2. These waters are 61 to 77 percent bicarbonate with very little sulphate1, so KH tracks GH. Working estimate: about 3 to 11 dKH by district2. Verify it with a test kit.

Twenty years old

The dataset's age

The best Yerevan tap dataset is from 2002 to 2004.1 Treat it as the shape of the water rather than as today's reading. From 2027 the new sanitary rules oblige the operator to publish hardness and mineral content for consumers4, so this page should be rewritten then.

The seasonal catch

Hardness rises in summer. As summer comes and water runs short, harder artesian water is blended into the softer spring supply. That mechanism is not in dispute. The utility, Veolia Djur, published a statement on 20 July 2026 saying hardness is set by the geology of the source and that indicators including hardness differ between areas because different areas are fed from different sources.5 The complaint that prompted it, from former Justice Minister Arpine Hovhannisyan on 18 July 2026, described the same blending.6 Utility and critic agree on the mechanism and disagree only about whether it matters for health.

One claim from the same argument should be discounted. A report on 28 July 2026 quoted a figure of hardness exceeding the norm by ten or eleven times at addresses in Yerevan and Ararat province6. Ten times the 7 mg-eq/L norm4 is roughly 200 dGH2. That is not tap water, that is brine. No laboratory report was published. Treat it as a political claim, not a measurement.

Keeps, on tap water

What works with no RO unit

Most community fish: tetras, rasboras, danios, barbs, Corydoras. Livebearers, though guppies and mollies prefer the harder end, so Davtashen suits them better than Avan. Neocaridina shrimp, the cherry shrimp and its color forms, which want roughly 6 to 8 dGH and 2 to 6 dKH, which is squarely inside the Yerevan range in most districts. And almost every aquarium plant, because plants are far less fussy about hardness than fish are.

Needs RO or rainwater

The short list of exclusions

Caridina shrimp, the Crystal Red and Taiwan Bee types, which need 4 to 6 dGH and a KH at or near zero. The KH is the problem, not the GH. Wild caught blackwater fish that need a pH below 6 and near zero hardness, such as chocolate gouramis or some wild Apistogramma. Serious discus breeding. That is the whole list.

Different water

Sevan and Hrazdan are not your tap

Surface water is harder and distinctly alkaline. The Arzni-Shamiram canal measures 9.8 to 12.6 dGH at pH 8.2 to 8.5; the lower Hrazdan canal 13.0 to 16.0 dGH at pH 7.8 to 8.0.72 The Gegham springs that fill Yerevan taps run pH 6.0 to 7.3.1 Careful with the name: the Arzni-Shamiram canal is a 92 km irrigation canal, not the Arzni artesian aquifer.

The practical conclusion

An Armenian beginner can keep almost everything worth keeping on tap water, for the price of a bottle of dechlorinator. Buy a GH and KH test kit or a TDS meter before you buy anything else, and re-check after water changes between July and September. It is the single most useful local fact on this site, and you will not find it published anywhere else.

Yerevan is the one city whose tap water has been sampled and published. For Gyumri, Vanadzor, Dilijan and the Sevan basin towns the first person to post a GH and KH reading will be the first anybody has1, which is a test kit, five minutes and a photograph in the group. Nothing outside Yerevan is estimated on this page.

Retail

The Armenian scene is one specialist shop deep.

There is exactly one real aquascaping retailer in the country. Everything else is a pet shop with a fish aisle. That is not a criticism of anyone. It is a market of three million people. But a beginner should know it before they start ringing round.

Three names circulate. One is much better than its reputation, one exists but has no web presence at all, and one is not an aquarium shop.

Gazanik, Գազանիկ

A genuine specialist. It calls itself an ակվարիումիստիկայի մասնագիտացված խանութ-սրահ, a specialist aquaristics shop and showroom, at Arshakunyats 54/49 in Yerevan, with a site in Armenian, Russian and English8. About 3,980 followers on Instagram and posting through September 20269. It also runs maintenance contracts, not only sales.

What they stock is unknown. Somebody needs to walk in and look.

Correction

Aquavita is mineral water

aquavita.am belongs to Aquavita, a sparkling mineral water bottled at Jermuk and sold by the Kilikia group.11 The site is about drinking water. No Armenian aquarium business trading under this name could be found. If someone remembers an Aquavita aquarium shop, it is most likely a memory of the water brand.

Gazanik, read from the shop's own database

Counts below are read straight from the shop's own published catalog, not from anyone's description of the shop. Checked 8 September 20268.

Seventy seven plant lines is a real scaping range, not four pots of Anubias. It includes Hemianthus callitrichoides Cuba, Micranthemum Monte Carlo, Eleocharis, Staurogyne repens, several Rotala, Pogostemon helferi and erectus, Hygrophila pinnatifida, Bucephalandra, around twenty Anubias forms and around twelve Microsorum. Plants are sold loose and unbranded, roughly 1,000 to 5,000 AMD.8

A complete CO2 system can be bought locally. Cylinder, solenoid regulator, inline atomiser or ceramic diffuser, check valve, bubble counter and drop checker are all on the shelf. So are rimless low iron tanks from 9 to 540 liters, WRGB lighting, aqua soil, scissors, spatula, plant glue, and ammonia, nitrite and nitrate test kits.8 The answer to "can I do this in Armenia" is yes, today, without importing anything.

One caveat. The structure and the counts are solid. Treat individual prices as indicative.

Two things worth knowing before you go looking. This trade is too young to have its own heading in Armenia's main business directory10, and Gazanik, the best aquarium shop in the country, is on Facebook and Instagram rather than in it, which tells you where to search. Everything indexed so far is in Yerevan, and regional businesses here tend to live on Facebook alone, so outside the capital the reliable move is to order from Yerevan and ask in the group.

The law

Keeping a wild animal without permission is an offence.

This is the most important paragraph on the page for anyone who has ever thought about lifting a loach out of a river. The answer is more restrictive than most people assume, and it is written down.

Code of Administrative Offences, Article 88.1

Added on 23 March 2022 by HO-75-N12. It covers keeping wild animals, including animals listed in the Red Book of Animals of Armenia, in captive and semi captive conditions by natural or legal persons without the appropriate permission.

Citizens: 150,000 to 200,000 AMD. Legal persons: 170,000 to 250,000 AMD. A repeat within a year adds a further 100,000 AMD.12

This is a separate offence from the fishing rules. It applies to the keeping, not to the catching.

Article 89

Illegal catching

Catching fish or another aquatic animal without the appropriate permit, at a prohibited time, in a prohibited place, or with prohibited instruments or methods. Citizens 50,000 to 100,000 AMD, plus confiscation of the catch, the gear and any watercraft.12

Article 90

Releasing an animal

Unauthorised resettlement, acclimatisation and hybridisation of animals. Citizens 50,000 to 80,000 AMD.12 This is the article that covers releasing an aquarium animal into Armenian water, together with Law on Fauna Articles 19 and 2113. Cite those three and you are on solid ground.

Article 91, and the Criminal Code

Red Book species

Destroying Red Book listed animals, including their spawning sites and eggs, is 80,000 AMD for a citizen.12 Criminal Code Article 385 covers illegal catching of aquatic animals, and paragraph 2 raises it for a Red Book species or an offence inside a protected area to a fine of 20 to 40 times monthly income, or one to four years imprisonment.14

Amateur fishing is legal, cheap and online. It just will not get you a tank fish.

Since 1 January 2025 all applications go through the environmental digital services platform, with login through the national ID system. Contracts are issued automatically within fifteen days, by email, with a QR code you must carry while fishing. The fee is a state duty at a base rate of 1,000 AMD plus a per kilogram charge, and any non Red Book fish is 100 AMD a kilogram. Amateur fishing is free for people of pension age.15 This is not a barrier.

The barrier is the species list and the gear rule. The 2026 order names seventeen taxa and prohibits amateur fishing for anything not on it.15 Of the eight small native species that would actually suit an aquarium, exactly one, the eastern riffle minnow արևելյան տառեխիկ, appears, at an 8 cm minimum size15. And the permitted gear is rods only, at most two rods with two hooks each15. The general prohibited methods rule bans nets, snares, loops, traps and hooks used as a mass method.16 There is no lawful way to catch a 7 cm loach with a rod.

Worked example

Compensation is charged per specimen and separately from any fine. A summer bakhtak, Ամառային բախտակ, is tariffed at 50,000 AMD. Taking one inside a protected natural area multiplies that by five, and all of Lake Sevan is one.17 That is 250,000 AMD in compensation alone2, before the Article 88.1 fine for keeping it and the Article 89 fine for catching it.

For non Red Book fish the tariff is 1,000 AMD per kilogram, and 5,000 AMD per kilogram for river trout. Destroying habitat or spawning sites multiplies by three. Selling or exporting an illegally taken Red Book species multiplies by five.17

Enforcement is real. During the closed period of 9 to 26 December 2024 the Environmental and Subsoil Inspection Body seized 32 vessels and 695 kg of fish, removed 879 nets and 119 crayfish traps from Lake Sevan, assessed damage at 3,473,830 AMD, and opened 3 administrative and 7 criminal cases.18

The lawful route, and it is a real one

Scientific and educational use is permitted and is free of charge under Government Decision N 600-N of 15 May 2025. For Red Book species the route is Minister of Environment Order N 259-N of 3 July 202419, and it is open to research institutions, universities, organizations whose statute covers fauna study, and qualified natural persons If a serious Armenian aquarist wanted to work with native fish properly, that last category is the door.

Never release an aquarium fish

Armenia's 2024 national invasive checklist lists 40 animal species, of which six are fish. Five of the six arrived by deliberate release into nature or by escaping from aquaculture. The newest, a Rhinogobius goby, was first recorded in 2021.20 The paper says two things worth quoting honestly: no studies of their impact on Armenian biodiversity have been published, and no monitoring or control of animal invasions is carried out in Armenia at all20.

In a country with no invasive species monitoring, the only control is the person holding the bucket.

One open question the law itself creates. It is unclear whether taking a fish for a home aquarium counts as amateur fishing under Decision N 1429-N15, or whether it needs a separate permission under Law on Fauna Article 2113. The two routes appear to point in different directions. The ministry should be asked directly and the answer published, because as it stands no Armenian aquarist can know. A second problem of the same kind: the 2026 amateur list gives no Latin binomials at all, only Armenian common names15, so three of the seventeen identifications are inference.

Community and supply

The whole hobby lives on Facebook, and it answers fast.

Two Facebook groups hold this country's aquarium community, one of about 7,900 members and one of about 555, with one shop's Instagram account at about 3,980 followers alongside them, the largest aquarium account in Armenia.9 That is where a question gets answered the same evening, where plants and fry change hands, and where the spelling of the word aquascaping is actually being decided. Post a photograph of your tap water test and somebody in your own district will tell you what they got.

A spelling to follow

The community writes ակվասկեյպինգ

The big group's own welcome text9 invites people to share their ակվասկեյպինգ, with a plain պ, where the reference document proposed ակվասկեյփինգ with the aspirated փ. Both are legitimate transliterations of the same English sound. The group's spelling is the one in the wild, and it is the one people will type. This hub carries both.

Inside the union

Russia is a structural advantage

Armenia is in the Eurasian Economic Union with Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan, so goods moving from Russia move inside the union: no duty, no declaration, no value threshold for personal goods.21 Ozon runs a full Armenian storefront with physical pickup points in Yerevan. Wildberries runs one too. For hardware, this is the single most useful practical route in the country.

Harder than it looks

The European Union, unproven

Neither the German nor the Danish plant shop says anywhere whether it ships to Armenia. There is a general reason for pessimism about plants: live plants entering the union need phytosanitary paperwork, which is the usual reason EU plant shops refuse orders from outside. Hardware is more likely to work than plants. Georgia has a genuine aquarium trade and Tbilisi is about six hours by road, but Georgia is outside the union, so the customs rules below apply to anything carried back.

Customs, and a warning about the number

This changed twice recently and most of the internet still quotes the old figure. The 1,000 euro temporary threshold expired on 31 March 2024. In August 2024 the Armenian government set its own figures, and these appear to be the current rule: postal and courier parcels 200,000 AMD and 31 kg per shipment, written in drams rather than euros, and goods carried in person across a land border 200 euros and 10 kg, reduced from 500 euros and 25 kg. Above the threshold, the union charges 15 percent of the value over the limit and not less than 2 euros per kilogram of excess weight.21

Ten kilograms is not much stone. That matters for the Tbilisi shopping trip.

Several widely cited sites still state a flat 200 euros for parcels, which appears to predate the August 2024 dram denominated rule, and forwarders quote figures that conflict with each other. Before anyone spends money on this, confirm the live figure with the State Revenue Committee itself. Nothing on this page is a substitute for that.

An open lead worth an afternoon

Gazanik sells the CO2 cylinder, and the refill is the errand nobody has run yet. This is the question every Armenian aquascaper hits in month three, and it looks solvable in an afternoon. The business directory shows three kinds of door to knock on. Yerevan Beer is listed as a manufacturer and seller of carbon dioxide and of dry ice10, and a brewery is the obvious local producer because fermentation makes it as a by product. Fireman, a fire fighting equipment chain, sells CO2 extinguishers10, and extinguisher companies fill and service CO2 cylinders as their core business. Three welding suppliers handle CO2 shielding gas10.

Three doors, all of them open on a weekday, and whoever knocks first can put the answer in the group. One safety note that applies everywhere: welding and beverage CO2 are usually the same gas at different purity grades, and welding grade is generally fine for a planted tank. What is not fine is a cylinder with no pressure test date, or a regulator not rated for CO2. Buy the regulator new.

One more signal. Armenia's dominant classifieds site carries a full aquarium taxonomy, including a category for aquarium and terrarium plants, and it carries live adverts for professional aquarium assembly and design dated July 2026 and for custom tank building. Somebody in Armenia is already being paid to build these. The individual listings are not readable from outside the site, so nothing here counts them.
